Chances are your college or uni hasn’t given you enough information on where to go from here.
Don’t just apply for ‘any’ job and end up in a supermarket! Let’s get you on the right track at the start.
Here are some answers to typical questions from students starting out on the career ladder.
Where do I start?
If your family doesn’t have a computer or laptop the library offers free sessions.
What should I do first?
Your CV is a vital tool that will (if crafted correctly) open doors for you. However to write a really good, compelling CV you need to have a clear idea of what career path you’re interested in, which will add focus your CV.
I know what I want to do (Uni or not)
Is Uni for you? – Here are some good resources for you to choose which, all from the top page of Google:
Not going to Uni? if you do already know what sort of job interests you, great! You will also find it helpful to visit the national careers service website, where you will find lots of resources and advice on just about everything. You will also find a variety of job profiles, which will show you what each job would require in terms of experience, skills and qualifications.
When writing your CV, look at the job description, skills and experience required, and make sure you match what they are looking for. If you’re happy that you’re a good fit then apply. If not don’t, it’s as simple as that! If you’re a close it but think you need to ‘upskill’ to make it work, you can still apply, as long as you show you’re keen and willing to learn. Often that is more important that someone who does have exactly the right skills and experience, but doesn’t show the desired personality to go with it.
I don’t know what I want to do
This is quite common so don’t worry. Again the national careers service is an invaluable resource, and there’s lots of it, so take the time to find what you’re looking for.
Here’s what you need to think about:
- What are you good at? Can be school or home related.
- What do you enjoy doing that you would like to do more of?
- Do you want to do a desk job or would you prefer to work outside?
- Would you prefer to work for a small business or a larger corporate organisation?
Once you can establish all this your thoughts will become more focussed.
What about social media?
Social media should play an important part in your job search and one of the best resources for this is Social-hire.com . They also have an excellent tool to help you find who’s hiring in your area too, here. I promote Linkedin and Twitter a lot, as excellent ways to promote candidates looking for work.
