Sue interviews MD Jo Samuels:

What was the inspiration behind Jems Recruitment?

Jo, owner of Jems Recruitment

On 25th August 2008, I, along with my colleagues, was made redundant with no notice. It was the beginning of the recession and we were far from alone in our circumstances. But I was also a mum of a two-year-old boisterous toddler, and I was due to have my second child the following month, so not the best circumstances to be interviewing for a new job! Roll forward three weeks and my daughter was born. Literally holding the baby in one arm, a phone in the cradle of my neck and typing on the laptop with my free hand, Jems Recruitment was also born. Starting the business wasn’t particularly thought out; think of a name, register with Companies House and then do what I do best…. recruit.

In the early days, I spent a lot of time worrying about the day to day responsibilities: often, I had to make tough choices and grow the business more slowly to ensure I could cope with the demand plus ensure I succeeded as a mum too. Through a lot of hard work, dedication, commitment and sleepless nights, I have driven the business from strength to strength.

Do you have any specialisms?

Jems specialises in three main sectors: Financial Professionals, Management and Business Support. If we find someone that is right for one of our roles we’ll give them a call to discuss aspirations and career goals. We want to truly understand what drives someone in their career and how to get there with the skills you have.

We want to support your need to discover the career and future you want. And we work closely with you to make sure you achieve your goals.

What makes you different from other recruitment companies?

We’ve actually been focusing a lot on this recently – what is Jems why? Why do we do what we do? Ultimately, it’s because we want to better people. We want to fuel ambition in both our clients and our candidates to experience opportunities outside of their comfort zones.

Roughly how many applicants would you have for any one role, typically?

It’s really varied and is very dependent on the type of role; salary, skills, hours; the location and also the time of year. It’s important for both our clients and also those applying for the jobs that we don’t waste their time. Candidates have to take half day holiday, pay for transport and take time to prepare for their interviews so, because we know our clients so well, we won’t send someone just to fill a ‘quota’. If we send a candidate for an interview it’s because they’re genuinely perfect for it.
